When a medical device program moves from prototype to production, the choice of silicone molder often decides whether the launch date survives contact with regulators. Most sourcing checklists repeat the same generic advice. Here is what actually matters when you audit a medical silicone parts manufacturer — from the factory floor, not the brochure.
1. ISO 13485 must be real, not laminated
A certificate on the wall proves an auditor visited once. What matters is how the system runs daily: are molding parameters under change control? Is every lot traceable back to raw material batch certificates? During a factory visit, ask to see a finished part traced backward to its material COA — a compliant factory does this in minutes; a paper-only system takes days.
2. Clean-room capability for the right risk class
Class I and II devices demand different environments. Check whether the molder has dedicated production lines for medical work — separated from industrial molding — and whether packaging happens in a controlled area. Our facility runs two dedicated medical lines with separated material handling.
3. Material compliance you can verify
“Medical grade” is a marketing phrase until you see documentation: USP Class VI biocompatibility reports, FDA-compliant material grades, and supplier declarations for each lot. 4. In-house tooling = faster design iterations
Medical parts rarely survive first tooling. Cavitation changes, gate relocations, draft corrections — each iteration is a week longer if the mold travels to a third-party toolmaker. An in-house mold shop (CNC, EDM, cold-runner expertise) compresses loops from weeks to days. This is exactly why we built our own precision mold facility next to the presses.
5. Quality gates you can audit
Ask three concrete questions: What is your IQC/IPQC/OQC structure? Which dimensions get CMM measurement versus profile projection? How are nonconformities closed? A serious factory answers with numbers and equipment lists — CMM, profile projectors, roughness testers — not adjectives.
